Scottish giants Rangers are reportedly considering a move for Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
According to Sky Sports News, the Ibrox club are looking to add another centre-back to Derek McInnes’ squad after already bringing in Ben Godfrey.
Makhanya, who currently plays for Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer, is among the defenders under consideration. The 22-year-old South African has become an important figure in Philadelphia’s backline, making 53 appearances for the MLS club.
European interest in Olwethu Makhanya
Interest from Rangers is not the first time Makhanya has attracted attention from Europe.
The Athletic previously reported that Philadelphia Union rejected an offer from a top Belgian club after the bid failed to meet their valuation of the South African defender.
Makhanya’s contract with Philadelphia runs until 2027, giving the MLS club a strong negotiating position over his future.
From Stellenbosch FC to Major League Soccer
Makhanya began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC in South Africa before moving to the United States in 2023.
Since joining Philadelphia Union, he has developed into a key member of the team’s defence and helped the club win the Supporters’ Shield under South African coach Bradley Carnell.
His performances have also earned him recognition at international level, with Makhanya receiving a Bafana Bafana call-up under Hugo Broos.
A move to Rangers would represent a major step in the 22-year-old’s career and give another South African defender an opportunity to test himself in European football.
For now, Makhanya remains a Philadelphia Union player, with Rangers reportedly considering him among their options as they look to strengthen at centre-back.
