Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly given Thapelo Maseko permission to find a new club after leaving the winger out of their pre-season squad for the tour of Austria.
The decision comes just weeks after Maseko enhanced his reputation on the international stage, playing a key role in Bafana Bafana’s memorable 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Despite those performances, the 22-year-old does not appear to feature in head coach Miguel Cardoso’s plans for the upcoming season, with the club now open to either another loan move or a permanent transfer.
Sundowns Open the Exit Door
According to reports, Sundowns have informed Maseko that he is free to explore opportunities elsewhere after being omitted from the squad travelling to Austria.
The Chloorkop outfit are understood to be willing to negotiate either a loan or a permanent deal as the player looks to secure regular first-team football.
Maseko had already spent the second half of last season away from Sundowns after joining Cypriot club AEL Limassol on loan.
Productive Spell in Cyprus
The winger moved to AEL Limassol in January in search of more consistent game time after falling out of favour under Miguel Cardoso.
He impressed during his time in Cyprus, making 15 appearances in all competitions while contributing two goals and one assist before returning to South Africa at the end of the loan spell.
Although no permanent agreement was reached, AEL Limassol are believed to remain interested in bringing him back.
World Cup Hero Attracting European Interest
Maseko’s impressive form earned him a recall to Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He played a crucial role in South Africa’s historic run to the Round of 16, scoring the winning goal against South Korea to seal qualification for the knockout stages before Bafana Bafana were eliminated by Canada.
His performances have further strengthened his reputation, with Czech giants Slavia Prague also reportedly monitoring the South African winger.
With Sundowns prepared to sanction his departure, Maseko could now have the opportunity to continue his career in Europe.
