South African Football Association (SAFA) have reportedly offered Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos a one-year contract extension that would keep him in charge until after the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Belgian’s current contract was due to expire this month, but the latest development suggests SAFA are keen to retain the experienced coach following his successful spell with the national team.
One-Year Extension on the Table
According to reports, Broos has been presented with a one-year extension and will remain in charge if he accepts the proposed terms.
The new deal would see the 74-year-old lead South Africa through the 2027 AFCON campaign, having overseen the team’s resurgence over the past five years.
Retirement Comments Sparked Speculation
The reported offer comes after Broos recently made headlines in Belgium when he told Voetbalnieuws that he did not expect to continue as Bafana Bafana head coach beyond his current contract.
While suggesting his time on the touchline could be coming to an end, Broos also indicated he would be open to remaining involved with South African football in a different role.
Those comments immediately sparked speculation over his future.
SAFA Quickly Responded
SAFA moved swiftly to dismiss reports that Broos had already left his position.
The association confirmed that the Belgian remained Bafana Bafana’s head coach and was expected to return to South Africa at the end of the month to continue preparations for the team’s upcoming assignments.
Should Broos accept the proposed extension, he would remain at the helm as South Africa look to build on their recent progress and challenge for honours at the 2027 AFCON.
