New Rangers signing Olwethu Makhanya has described his move to the Scottish giants as a “dream come true”, while manager Derek McInnes has revealed why the club identified the Bafana Bafana defender as a key transfer target.
The 22-year-old completed his switch from MLS side Philadelphia Union this week, signing a four-year contract with the option of a further year, subject to international clearance.
A Childhood Dream Fulfilled
Speaking for the first time as a Rangers player, Makhanya admitted the magnitude of the move was difficult to put into words.
“I can’t even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can’t wait to get started.”
The South African international also revealed that playing in Europe had always been one of his biggest ambitions.
“For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.”
The move sees Makhanya become the latest South African to represent the Glasgow club, joining a select group of players to have worn the famous Rangers jersey.
McInnes Explains the Signing
Rangers manager Derek McInnes believes Makhanya has all the qualities needed to succeed at Ibrox and continue developing into a top defender.
“We’re really pleased to bring Olwethu to the club. He’s a player we have watched closely, and we feel he has all the attributes to make a real impact here, while also continuing to develop his game.”
The Rangers boss also highlighted the defender’s maturity despite his age.
“For someone so young, he’s already gained experience in different environments. He is a strong, physical and confident defender, and I look forward to seeing him settle into the squad and show what he is capable of as a Rangers player.”
A New Chapter Begins
Makhanya now begins the biggest challenge of his career as Rangers prepare for the new Scottish Premiership season and their UEFA Europa League qualifying campaign.
The Bafana Bafana defender will be hoping to establish himself quickly at Ibrox as he takes another major step in his European journey.
