The reigning African champions looked destined for an early exit after a difficult first half, but a spirited comeback ensured they remain in contention for a place in the quarter-finals.
Nightmare Start for Banyana
Desiree Ellis’ side entered the match under immense pressure following their shock 2-1 defeat to Tanzania in the tournament opener.
Things quickly went from bad to worse as Ivory Coast seized control through Grace Sery, who struck twice in the first half to hand her side a commanding 2-0 lead.
With South Africa staring at consecutive defeats, their title defence appeared to be slipping away.
Second-Half Fightback
Banyana emerged after the break with renewed urgency and finally found a breakthrough in the 71st minute.
Thembi Kgatlana sparked the comeback with a superb finish to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finale.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, substitute Hildah Magaia delivered the decisive moment, finding the back of the net in the 99th minute to rescue a crucial point for South Africa.
All Eyes on Burkina Faso
The draw keeps Banyana Banyana’s knockout hopes alive, but there is little room for error.
South Africa must now defeat Burkina Faso in their final Group B match on Tuesday, 4 August, to boost their chances of reaching the quarter-finals and continue their quest to defend the WAFCON title.
Victory would also keep alive their hopes of progressing towards qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
