Durban City will be without midfielder Kyle Jurgens when they face Orlando Pirates in their highly anticipated MTN8 quarter-final on Saturday.
The 22-year-old is suspended for the encounter after an outstanding one-match ban carried over from the previous campaign.
Jurgens to Serve One-Match Ban
The Premier Soccer League confirmed Jurgens as one of only two suspended players for this weekend’s MTN8 quarter-finals, alongside Mamelodi Sundowns forward Brayan León.
Jurgens accumulated the required number of yellow cards to trigger an automatic one-match suspension during the previous campaign.
With the suspension not served before the end of last season, it carries over into the new domestic campaign, ruling him out of Durban City’s first competitive fixture.
Big Loss Ahead of Pirates Test
Jurgens’ absence comes at a difficult time for Durban City as they prepare to face the defending Betway Premiership champions in a knockout encounter.
The midfielder became an important part of City’s engine room during his loan spell from Stellenbosch FC and helped the club lift the Nedbank Cup.
His performances also earned him a nomination for the competition’s Most Promising Player award.
Durban City subsequently secured his services on a permanent basis from Stellenbosch ahead of the new campaign.
Durban City Forced to Reshuffle
The suspension means Durban City will need to adjust their midfield for one of their biggest early-season assignments.
Jurgens’ defensive work and presence in the middle of the park would have been particularly valuable against a Pirates side carrying significant attacking quality.
The two teams meet at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, 8 August, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.
