Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season, with the Chicago Fire defender now set to undergo surgery in Finland after further assessment of his thigh injury.
Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter confirmed the significant setback, bringing an early end to what had been a breakthrough year for the South African centre-back.
The news is also a major blow for Bafana Bafana, while any potential European transfer for the highly-rated defender has now been put on hold.
Injury Worse Than Initially Feared
Mbokazi suffered the injury during a Chicago Fire training session last month.
Initial expectations suggested the defender could be sidelined for around two months, potentially allowing him to return during the latter stages of the MLS campaign.
However, further medical examinations have revealed that the thigh muscle tear is more severe than initially thought.
The 20-year-old will now travel to Finland for surgery, with his recovery expected to take approximately four to five months.
That timeline effectively rules him out for the remainder of Chicago Fire’s 2026 campaign, including any potential MLS playoff involvement.
Major Blow for Bafana Bafana
Mbokazi’s lengthy absence also creates a significant problem for South Africa.
The defender is set to miss Bafana Bafana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea in September, as well as the scheduled matches against Kenya in November.
It comes after Mbokazi established himself as a key member of the national team’s defence during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing every minute of South Africa’s historic run to the knockout stages.
European Transfer Plans Put on Hold
The injury could also have major implications for Mbokazi’s immediate club future.
His performances for Chicago Fire and Bafana Bafana had reportedly attracted attention from European clubs, particularly following his displays at the World Cup.
However, his agent Basia Michaels has confirmed to SABC Sport that any potential move will have to wait while the defender recovers.
“Any transfer for Mbokazi would require him to successfully complete a medical… Unfortunately, any plans to transfer the player will have to be put on hold,” Michaels said.
With Mbokazi now facing surgery and several months of rehabilitation, a potential move away from Major League Soccer is unlikely to be revisited until he has demonstrated his recovery.
Breakthrough Year Cut Short
The injury brings a frustrating end to what had otherwise been a remarkable year for the former Orlando Pirates defender.
Mbokazi’s growing reputation in the United States was underlined when he earned enough fan support to be selected for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, reportedly receiving more votes than Lionel Messi.
The injury ultimately prevented him from taking part.
Attention will now turn entirely towards his surgery and rehabilitation, with Mbokazi facing a lengthy road back before resuming what had been a rapidly rising career.
