Rangers have officially confirmed the signing of Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.
The 22-year-old centre-back has signed an initial four-year contract with the Scottish giants, with Rangers holding the option to extend the deal by a further year, subject to international clearance.
The transfer marks another significant milestone in Makhanya’s career as he takes the next step into European football.
European Dream Becomes Reality
After impressing in Major League Soccer with Philadelphia Union, Makhanya now joins one of Scotland’s most successful clubs.
The former Stellenbosch FC defender arrives at Ibrox with growing experience at both club and international level, having established himself as a regular member of Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad.
His move also sees him become the latest South African to wear the famous Rangers jersey, following Johnny Hubbard, Don Kichenbrand, Dean Furman and Bongani Zungu.
New Challenge at Ibrox
Makhanya joins Rangers as the club looks to strengthen its defensive options ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The Scottish giants will compete on multiple fronts this season, including the Scottish Premiership, domestic cup competitions and the UEFA Europa League.
His pace, composure on the ball and defensive qualities are expected to provide added depth to Rangers’ backline as they chase silverware under head coach Derek McInnes.
Europa League Awaits
The South African international could soon experience European football for the first time.
Having finished third in the Scottish Premiership last season, Rangers enter the UEFA Europa League in the Third Qualifying Round, where they have been drawn against Polish side Jagiellonia Białystok.
The first leg will be played away from home on 6 August, before Rangers host the return leg at Ibrox on 13 August.
Should Rangers progress, they will move one step closer to securing a place in the Europa League league phase, giving Makhanya the opportunity to showcase his talent on the European stage.
