Mamelodi Sundowns will begin their 2026/27 campaign without Brayan León after the Colombian forward was ruled out of Saturday’s MTN8 quarter-final against Polokwane City through suspension.

The Premier Soccer League has confirmed that León must serve a one-match ban carried over from the previous domestic campaign.
Why León Is Suspended
León accumulated four yellow cards in domestic competition last season, triggering an automatic one-match suspension.
His fourth booking came in Sundowns’ final domestic match of the campaign, a 3-2 defeat against TS Galaxy.
With no further PSL-sanctioned fixture available for him to serve the suspension last season, the outstanding ban carries over into the new campaign.
That means León will sit out the MTN8 encounter against Polokwane City before becoming available again for selection.
Sundowns Lose In-Form Forward
His absence represents an early attacking setback for Miguel Cardoso as Sundowns begin their season with an immediate knockout assignment.
León has made an impressive impact since arriving from Independiente Medellín in January, scoring 15 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions.
Those numbers have quickly established the 26-year-old as an important part of the Sundowns attack.
Opportunity for Sundowns’ Other Attackers
Cardoso will now have to reshuffle his attacking options for the Polokwane City encounter.
León’s suspension could open the door for another forward to take greater responsibility as Sundowns look to progress to the MTN8 semi-finals and begin the new campaign on a positive note.
The Colombian’s absence is only temporary, but Sundowns will have to navigate their first competitive match of the season without one of their leading goalscorers.
