Danish giants FC Copenhagen have reportedly opened negotiations with Mamelodi Sundowns over a potential transfer for Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko.

The 22-year-old could finally be heading back to Europe, with Copenhagen understood to have submitted a formal proposal as discussions between the two clubs gather momentum.
Copenhagen Step Up Interest
Copenhagen’s interest in Maseko is not new, but the latest developments suggest the Danish club have now taken concrete steps towards securing his signature.
A formal proposal has reportedly been tabled, with negotiations between Copenhagen and Sundowns now underway.
Maseko is understood to be keen on returning to European football should the two clubs reach an agreement.
Maseko Outside Cardoso’s Plans
The development comes after Maseko was left out of Sundowns’ pre-season tour to Austria.
The winger has been training away from the main group after falling outside Miguel Cardoso’s immediate plans for the new campaign.
His situation at Chloorkop had already opened the door for a possible departure, either permanently or through another loan agreement.
European Return on the Cards
Maseko previously spent time in Europe with Cypriot outfit AEL Limassol after joining them on loan in January.
He made 15 appearances across all competitions during his spell in Cyprus, scoring twice and registering one assist before returning to Sundowns.
His performances helped him force his way back into the Bafana Bafana setup, where he subsequently enhanced his reputation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Previous Interest in Maseko
Copenhagen are among several clubs to have been linked with the South African winger.
There had previously been interest from outside South Africa, including Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Pyramids FC, while reports suggested frustration from Maseko’s camp over earlier opportunities that failed to materialise.
Sundowns have remained reluctant to strengthen domestic rivals with the player and an overseas transfer could now provide a solution for all parties.
Talks Continue
No final agreement has yet been announced, but Copenhagen’s formal approach represents a significant development in Maseko’s future.
With the winger eager for regular football and Sundowns prepared to consider an overseas move at the right valuation, negotiations could determine whether Maseko gets another opportunity to establish himself in Europe.
