Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly reached a club-to-club agreement with Danish giants FC Copenhagen for the permanent transfer of Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko.
The two clubs have agreed on a fee of approximately €1.5 million, around R28 million, with the 22-year-old now needing to finalise personal terms before the move can be completed.
Sundowns and Copenhagen Reach Agreement
FC Copenhagen recently stepped up their pursuit of Maseko after opening negotiations with Sundowns over a permanent transfer.
Those discussions have now produced an agreement between the clubs, clearing one of the biggest hurdles standing between Maseko and a return to European football.
The proposed €1.5 million transfer remains subject to the player reaching an agreement with Copenhagen over personal terms and completing the remaining formalities.
Sundowns Opened Door for European Move
Maseko’s future at Chloorkop had become increasingly uncertain after he was left out of Sundowns’ pre-season tour.
The winger was not part of head coach Miguel Cardoso’s immediate plans for the new campaign, with his representatives subsequently given permission to explore opportunities abroad.
Despite attracting interest from clubs in South Africa, Sundowns were reportedly unwilling to sanction a move that would strengthen one of their domestic rivals.
A permanent overseas transfer therefore emerged as the preferred solution.
Copenhagen Opportunity Emerges
Copenhagen’s move offers Maseko another opportunity to establish himself in European football.
The Bafana Bafana attacker previously spent time in Cyprus with AEL Limassol after joining the club on loan from Sundowns in January.
He returned to Chloorkop after the loan spell but now appears to be heading back to Europe on a permanent basis.
Personal Terms Remain
While Sundowns and Copenhagen have reached an agreement, the transfer is not yet official.
Maseko must still agree personal terms with the Danish club before the deal can be finalised.
Should those negotiations be successfully concluded, the move would bring an end to his time at Sundowns and open a new chapter in Denmark with one of Scandinavia’s biggest clubs.
