Olwethu Makhanya’s future at Philadelphia Union has become increasingly uncertain after the South African defender reportedly failed to report for the club’s pre-season preparations as he continues to pursue a move to Europe.
According to transfer insider Tom Bogert, Makhanya has not returned to the MLS side, with the defender believing the club went back on an understanding that he would be allowed to leave if the right European opportunity arose.
The latest development adds another chapter to a transfer saga that has already attracted interest from clubs across Europe.
Makhanya Wants European Move
Bogert reports that Makhanya remains determined to secure a move to Europe this transfer window.
The former Stellenbosch FC defender is said to feel Philadelphia Union broke a promise after rejecting an offer from a Belgian club earlier this year, believing he had earned the opportunity to take the next step in his career.
The 22-year-old has established himself as one of South Africa’s most promising young defenders since moving to Major League Soccer in 2023.

Philadelphia Union, however, have a different version of events.
According to the report, the club insist there was never a guarantee that Makhanya would be sold if a European offer arrived. Instead, their position has always been that they would consider a transfer only if an offer reflected the player’s market value.
The MLS side believe the bid from Belgium fell short of that valuation.
Rangers Interest Remains
Scottish Premiership side Rangers have also been credited with an interest in Makhanya.
However, Bogert reports that althoughRangers interested in Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya with both Philadelphia Union and the player’s representatives, talks have not progressed beyond the initial stages.
